Slavery and capitalism, two peas in a pod?

Walter Johnson’s attempt to cast slavery in a special relationship to capitalism fails because historically the odious institution of slavery has existed within an astounding range of economic and social arrangements, and vastly antedates anything recognizable as capitalism proper. Nor is it a mystery why it is possible to draw analogies between the institution of slavery and Marx’s construal of the institution of wage labor.
