Eric Alterman says that summarily killing Bin Laden was necessary justice, but we should not rejoice. A victory for justice is rare enough that if it were true justice, we should rejoice. But it’s not really a triumph for justice. It’s a demonstration of superior force by the US. But we've seen many such demonstrations by the US, and they are indeed no cause for joy. True justice would have been to take bin Laden alive and subject him to a public trial for his alleged crimes.
