Winter of Discontent

Don't give Mubarek any (more) guns!

I have been watching peaceful demonstrations in Egypt turn into a popular uprising. Under attack from pro-Mubarak forces, the anti-Mubarak people say they will die before they leave the square. It rather reminds me of the Warsaw uprising against the Germans in World War II. If Mubarak doesn’t step down and leave Egypt, I would not be surprised to see this situation turn into a secular insurgency. It doesn’t take very many people to form an insurgent group. Indeed, the violence may spread throughout the Middle East. I don’t like supplying arms to Israel for use against the Palestinians, and I don’t like supplying arms to dictatorships for use against their own people. I have no doubt other governments will be happy to supply these governments with arms, but I don’t want to see any arms labeled “made in the USA” there.
