Witness this morning's New York Times photograph of Gazan mourners. My cold thought on seeing it was that they've done this before.

The mourners' self-conscious mannerism complements the mundane indifference Mr. Press describes. We witness the acquired, transmitted experience of generations, one in causing and one in practicing mourning.

Mr. Press encourages my wish for the parties to experience and nurse a mature self-loathing which banishes their loathing for each other.
