Get rid of Star Wars missile defense schemes and the private contractors doing military jobs. These people are a menace and break the Pentagon's budget. Military people doing military jobs will save a lot of money. No across-the-board cuts in any government agency. You need to know what is fat and what is muscle before you make cuts!

This proves that in the recent unipolar world, many nations could get by with shirking on their military spending. So what?

The real problem in controlling questionble items within the defense budget is Congress, which so often rushes to support plants in their own individual districts.

Several times Congressional figures have circulated memos asking members to please step forward to tell everyone of any projects or wastage that should be cancelled within their own constituencies. There has never been a single example volunteered!

Perhaps The Nation should sponsor a wide-ranging drive to get "cut defense" legislators to show targets to cut within their own districts.

Any bets on the result?
