The article evaluates the book "Manhood in America," by Michael Kimmel. It explores the historical survey of American masculinity. It depicts white straight masculinity as a cultural dominant under continuous construction at various sites in society: in a typically oppressive and exclusionary relation to women and gay men, African-Americans, Native Americans and immigrants. The book is genially accessible, thanks in part to the personal anecdotes sprinkled here and there throughout it, which contribute to the reader's sense of being led on an engaging tour by a smart and sensitive guide.
