The article reviews the book "A Queer World," edited by Martin Duberman. It focuses on the debate between queer academics and journalists as both groups grapple with the best way for gay men to respond to the AIDS crisis. The book feels pragmatic, useful, real, the best essays combine theoretical aptitude with real-world application. With rare exception, most of the contributors use a writing style that, like Duberman's own, is cogent, jargon-free, untweedy. Caveat aside, there are some good essays in the book. Because these pieces inflect the political more than the abstractly theoretical, it's best to know the theory beforehand.
