The article presents information on the book "Mexican Postcards," by Carlos Monsiváis. The picture in tile paper of Velázquez's funeral showed Ernesto Zedillo and the rest of the Mexican political class striking the same hieratic poses that one sees in pre-Columbian stelae all over Mexico. It was an uncanny sight, and made one long for commentary from Carlos Monsiváis, one of Mexico's most important and polemical essayists. For only Monsiváis is able to capture the scene in all of its comic grandeur, poking fun at the politicos while also reading the scene from within the world of the believers.
