In Vermont since 1985 lesbians and gay men have gained, inclusion in a hate-crimes bill, an anti-discrimination law, domestic partnership benefits for state employees, and a ruling by the Vermont Supreme Court that protects second-parent adoption which lets two parents of one sex have a legal relationship with their child, one of three state Supreme Courts with such a ruling. On July 22, three same-sex couples filed a lawsuit that may be more, who were denied marriage licenses.
