This article focuses on Toronto Film Festival of the year 1997. This year the Toronto International Film Festival offered 281 pictures from fifty-eight countries, with screenings organized under a dozen different headings--from Gala Presentations and Masters to Planet Africa and Midnight Madness. For ten days in early September, Toronto let its audiences learn something about what they want from the movies, and what the movies' offer them. This year's first two Gala Presentations might almost have been chosen to set the limits of cinematic desire.
