Class war in the old West

This article appraises the book "Big Trouble: A Murder in a Small Western Town Sets Off a Struggle for the Soul of America," by J. Anthony Lukas. Anthony Lukas begins his story with the beginning of Steunenberg's final day. But it is not really the story of a murder, and the drumroll of the book's subtitle is misleading. For, at heart, this is a writer's book about a time of war. Not so much the war itself-the other industrial revolution between capital and labor, which began in earnest some thirty years before Steunenberg's assassination and stretched on past the conclusion of the conspiracy trial of the Western Federation of Miners' Big Bill Haywood.
