This article discusses the motion picture "A Self Made Hero," directed by Jacques Audiard. The film is based on a novel by Jean-Francois Deniau. The film by Audiard offers a version of recent history that is rambunctious, cynical and utterly indispensable to anyone who wants to learn how to pull a military career out of a suitcase of lingerie. When the moral of a story is so much at odds with its raconteur's little pleasures, the audience may wonder at the meaning of "real" a word that becomes all the more tantalizing when the audience discovers that this storyteller admits to fraud.
