This article discusses the book "Boxer: An Anthology of Writings on Boxing and Visual Culture," edited by David Chandler, John Gill, Tania Guha and Gilane Tawachos. The only essay in the book that does justice to Oates's inspiration is Roger Lloyd Conover's compelling narrative on the incandescent life and career of Arthur Cravan. The two essays on boxing in cinema, by David Alan Mellor and Nick James, both begin with a set of debatable assumptions that are never convincingly argued. Melor's "The Ring of Impossibility, or, the Failure to Recover Authenticity in the Recent Cinema of Boxing" is a comparative reading of representations of the boxer as "a singular, heroic figure of tested masculinity" in old Hollywood movies.
