This article discusses four poems on the topic funeral. William Blake's magnificent poem "Jerusalem," which is the unofficial national anthem and an old favorite in the radical and working-class songbook, begins by asking, "And did those feet in ancient time/Walk upon England's mountains green?" It refers to the misty pre-Arthurian legend whereby Joseph of Arimathea brought Jesus to Great Britain. The latest effusion by Ted Hughes is "6 September 1997," doesn't even have the excuse of being exacted by a sovereign. Hughes missed a perfectly good chance to not write a poem.
