This article presents information regarding the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO). For decades, the AFL's Leadership, including its two top offices, had remained almost exclusively white and male. Lane Kirkland's executive council had only three women out of thirty-three members. So it was notable that John Sweeney's victorious campaign to succeed Kirkland as president focused on the need to organize women. Sweeney argued for the expansion of the executive council to include more women and advocated adding a third top position, which would be reserved for a female or person of color. Now eight women sit on the executive council, which has been expanded to fifty-one members.
