This article discusses the book "Heretic's Heart," by Margot Adler. Margot Adler didn't take part in an orgy, either, nor did she join the American Communist Party, though friends invited her to do both. And so her modest yet unsparing memoir of being young in the sixties is not about sex, drugs, rock and roll or a theatrical spurning of privilege and patriotism that would require an equally splashy recantation later on. Rather, it is about how a wondering, doubting, searching temperament found safe passage through a minefield of absolutes and extremes. Today, as a radio journalist, science-fiction fan and "priestess of the old religion of nature," she has cobbled together a life in which "skepticism and mystery" can coexist.
