This article appraises the book "Asphalt Nation: How the Automobile Took Over America, and How We Can Take It Back," by Jane Holtz Kay. Jane Holtz Kay's information-packed book, "Asphalt Nation: How the Automobile Took Over America, and How We Can Take It Back," increases one's understanding of how central transportation is to society's ills. Kay is at her best explaining why good design is impossible when buildings say more about one's vehicles than about one's ownself. American communities large and small were once compact, walkable, efficient and human in scale.
