This article appraises the books "Growing Darkness, Growing Light," by Jean Valentine; "Loose Sugar," by Brenda Hillman and "The End of Desire," by Jill Bialosky. Jill Bialosky, Brenda Hillman and Jean Valentine fall into this category of underlit but deserving of considerable and considered attention. Each represents a very different aesthetic--Valentine, a writer of deep-image, projective verse; Hillman, a once pure-lyric poet, now a follower of gnosticism and a passionate experimenter in form; Bialosky, an unabashedly autobiographical first book poet.
