This article focuses on the absolutism of the first amendment. Promoting civil liberties has been at the core of this magazine's agenda since its founding by abolitionists more than 130 years ago and freedom of speech is probably the liberty the editors have most sought to champion. From the dissents of Justices Oliver Wendell Holmes and Louis Brandeis in cases targeting socialists early in this century through court victories for political freedom in the 1960s, 70s and even the 90s civil libertarianism has meant protection for dissidents agitators and others on the margins.
