Most liberal critiques of the proposed flag-burning amendment miss the point, or at least miss the point being made by the proponents. This is because liberals are useless when it comes to arguing with the irrational in general. Many citizens believe this symbol of slavery and secession ought not to be flown over state capitols. Even though Old Glory has since flown over Vietnam and Panama and other disgraceful scenes, it is still the flag of the Emancipation Proclamation. Another less amusing liberal contortion concerns the issue of torture in, or rather by, Israel. It's been fun nonetheless watching the excuse-makers. According to reliable Israeli human rights organizations, the police were using torture as an administrative measure on the West Bank and in Gaza long before the Hamas bombers got started.
