The article presents the author's comments on various issues related with slavery. The author says that U.S. Representative Tony Hall, who proposed that bill apologizing for slavery, is endowed with some of the same endearingly bright qualities. In any number of religious and philosophical traditions, asking forgiveness is to subject oneself to God's fierce judgment. However, the problem is the lingering ideology of racial difference and caste along with the inherited economic disadvantages of slavery and segregation. So long as that subtle legacy of slavery remains, an apology would be superficial, not reflective of the moral change truly required of the U.S.
