The article discusses books like "Revolution of Conscience: Martin Luther King Jr., and the Philosophy of Nonviolence," by Greg Moses and "The Papers of Martin Luther King, Jr.," vol. 3, "Birth of a New Age, December 1955--December 1956," edited by Clayborne Carson. The guttings of King's philosophical and spiritual essence mean walking away from the man who said, "our government must depend more on its moral power than on its military power. One explanation for the nation's refusal to honor King the pacifist is that pacifism itself is not understood. It is rarely taught as a viable alternative to violence.
