One can tell a lot about a politician by his friends, but even more by his enemies. Dennis Kucinich, the dynamic former mayor of Cleveland and the newly elected Democratic Representative from Ohio's 10th Congressional District on the West Side of Cleveland, has the right friends, Labor unions and environmental groups alike lent strong support to his grass-roots campaign in a hard-fought election last year. Labor also provided critical financial assistance; unions contributed more than $200,000 and the national AFL. Kucinich also has the right enemies. Early last October, with Kucinich maintaining a healthy lead over incumbent Martin Hoke, a group of Cleveland business leaders sent out a distress signal to Cleveland's corporate community.
