It is informed that Tom Hayden is running for mayor of Los Angeles. The election will be held on April 8, 1997 and the rally at New Otani Hotel underscores his central campaign theme: the need to bridge the gap between the city's affluent West Side, a land of cell phones and cappuccino and busy upscale malls, and the other Los Angeles, where millions of working people struggle to make ends meet. Los Angeles, Hayden declares, is "two cities, one that is overdeveloped and congested, the other that is underdeveloped and poor. They cannot coexist harmoniously forever under the complacent control of an establishment in denial."
