The article discusses two books: Alvin Ailey: A Life in Dance, by Jennifer Dunning; The Joffrey Ballet: Robert Jaffrey and the Making of an American Dance Company, by Sasha Anawalt. Jennifer Dunning's Alvin Ailey and Sasha Anawalt's The Joffrey Ballet go a long way toward answering questions related to racism, sexual orientation, and career of dancers. Of the two, Dunning's is more satisfying, a work by a longtime New York Times critic that unravels the complicated weave of Ailey's private and professional life with knowledge, skill and tact. Anawalt's book, the first by this California-based dance writer, is considerably less expert. Not only can it be glib, it often loses sight of its subject.
