The article focuses on the book The Poetry of Healing: A Doctor's Education in Empathy, Identity, and Desire, by Rafael Campo. In an age when the manufacture of fame is a ceaseless enterprise, the finest memoirs are mostly, being written by unknowns. At its best moments, Rafael Campo's memoir The Poetry of Healing belongs on this shelf. Campo has spent much of his life wandering amid the pillars of the establishment. The heart of The Poetry of Healing is Campo's lengthy account of his relationship with a gay man Gary Fisher. The Poetry of Healing is merely self-indulgent. The problem is only compounded by Campo's tendency to stain overmuch for effect.
