The article focuses "Diaries," written by Christopher Isherwood edited by Katherine Bucknell. The aging expatriate's struggle to get past a deep-dyed sense of privacy, and his ultimate embrace of American informality, strike the author, in retrospect, as central character traits of the writer and the man. Bucknell tells in her editorial introduction that journals written by Isherwood go back as far as his childhood. The first 380 pages of this book are the most polished. In 1946 Isherwood took his actual journals from 1939 through 1944 and revised them, interpolating commentary that identifies central players and brings main themes into focus.
