The article presents information about the book "Out of Order, Out of Sight," vol. I and vol. II, by Adrian Piper. The publication of a two-volume anthology of writings by artist Piper could not be better timed. Piper is uniquely qualified to provide some perspective on the relevance of dead Germans for current art practice, as she is a professor of philosophy at Wellesley College. The two volumes feature essays, artists' statements, lectures, descriptions, transcriptions, notes on performances and open letters. They provide a fascinating record of the artist's struggle with art-making, and of her position in the art world over the past twenty-five years. Piper is unsparingly honest and acute in her analysis of both.
