The article focuses on closure of the publication of the Liberal magazine The New Republic. The New Republic's overall impact was to cut the legs out from under the tough-minded liberalism it was allegedly developing, while at the same time strengthening the most regressive elements of the right-center establishment. Owner Marty Peretz hired reporter Michael Kelly to be editor. It may be that Marty Peretz felt that he needed to pretend to consider real liberals before, for appearance' sake, settling on someone who shared his hatred of them.
