The article focuses on the League of Conservation Voters. Deb Callahan, president of the league, put out the league's Dirty Dozen list in 1996. Few on the list were in any commanding position from which to despoil nature in either the 104th or 105th congress. The most prominent politician in the Dirty Dozen was Senator Larry Pressler of South Dakota, then chairing the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee, which does have significant environmental oversight responsibilities. If the league is truly in the business of going after the anti-enviro heavyweights, it should target in 1998 South Dakota's other U.S. Senator, Tom Daschle, who's had a savage environmental impact on the Black Hills with his services to the timber and mining companies.
