The article focuses on California's Proposition 209, the anti-civil rights initiative, declared it the first battle in a national war to "end affirmative action." With initial polls showing overwhelming support for 209, Pat Buchanan giddily proclaimed it the "mother of all racial wedges," which would split asunder the Democratic base. The vigorous campaign against 209 also averted the potential disaster of minority communities approving the measure. In Los Angeles, the credit for turning the minority vote around goes directly to the David Duke ad of the Defeat 209 Campaign as well as the Greater South Los Angeles Affirmative Action Project and the Metropolitan Alliance.
