Few national union presidents have ever had to endure the nail-biting ordeal that Teamster chief Ron Carey did in mid-December, as mail ballots cast by hundreds of thousands of his members were laboriously counted for five long days just outside Washington, D.C. Most leadership elections in organized labor are uncontested. Even when top officials are challenged, the outcome is usually decided at conventions, where voting is conducted among a few thousand delegates without public fanfare or direct participation by the rank and file.
