A group of Labor politicians, trade unionists and media folk gathered recently around a table in "The Gay Hussar," a celebrated hangout in London's Soho for Labor Party sympathizers. British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who calls himself a "modernizer," has taken this message to heart. The Labor Party has shifted dramatically rightward in the two years since he became its leader. The real breakthrough that Blair has achieved is that voters no longer believe a Labor government will be an expensive shambles of an experiment that will end in tears.
