This article presents information on two books, "Modern Art in the Common Culture," and "The Rise of the Sixties: American and European Art in the Era of Dissent," by Thomas Crow. Art is more popular today than ever before, but what most people really like is the art of the past especially the late nineteenth century. Thomas Crow begins both books under review with this curious fact, and calls on the history of art to explain and perhaps even change this state of affairs. Crow has written reviews of shows, essays for exhibition catalogues and commentaries on the current art scene. Now he has collected and revised these pieces, under the title "Modern Art in the Common Culture." "The Rise of the Sixties," is midway between history and criticism, it is about a past recent enough to be felt directly in today's art.
