The article discusses several memoirs written by gay men. Titles of some books that are discussed in the article are "Young Man From the Provinces: A Gay Life Before Stonewall," by Alan Helms, "Midlife Queer: Autobiography of a Decade, 1971-1981," by Martin Duberman, "Truth Serum," by Bernard Cooper and "Heaven's Coast," by Mark Doty. In the book "Midlife Queer," Duberman carries his life story through seventies, from the heady early days of gay politics to the advent of AIDS. According to the author, after the brilliant book "Cures," by the same author, the present publication is a terrible letdown, a compilation of facts, grudges and unexamined moments that neither informs nor illuminates.
