This article presents information on the book "Fatal Advice: How Safe-Sex Education Went Wrong," by Cindy Patton. This book is both an attempt to explain why H.I.V. prevention education has not saved lives and an analysis of the cultural and political effects of "safer sex." Since the mid-eighties, Patton's work has been crucial to the development of a theoretically and politically sophisticated understanding of H.I.V. and AIDS, one grounded in queer AIDS activism and direct involvement in sex-positive H.I.V. prevention projects.
