The article presents information on the social security and welfare in the U.S. For the able-bodied people who lost their General Assistance checks, becoming "independent" of the welfare system was a disaster. Approximately 20,000 former recipients were evicted and homelessness increased throughout the state, according to a study by the Michigan League for Human Services. Before the cutoff, 2 percent of G.A. recipients were homeless. By the summer of 1992, half the former recipients surveyed reported a period of homelessness lasting between three and six months. Most did not find jobs.
