A few months ago, the author was watching CNN's Crossfire and saw Michael Kinsley do his regular sign-off. Crossfire is not completely ratings-driven. It would rather be boring than take risks with the consensus. The Kinsley job was first offered to George Stephanopoulos, on very generous terms. But when he said no it went, or it will go, to Geraldine Ferraro: a casehardened centrist whose last sustained television exposure involved the endorsement of Coke Classic or Preparation H, and a politician whose very financial disclosure statement shows that she understands our system of checks and balances.
