The PLO leader, Yasir Arafat was facing a near civil rebellion that reached its nadir in November 1994, when Palestinian police shot dead fourteen of their own people during confrontations in Gaza. Twelve months later, Arafat is riding high. Recent opinion polls showed 72 percent of Palestinians in the occupied territories support the peace process, with 58 percent backing his leadership, 52 percent said they would vote for candidates from his mainstream Fatah movement. Arafat's nearest rival, the Islamist movement Hamas, trailed a long way behind with around 13 percent. The recent Israeli sponsored assassination of Hamas's leader Yahya Ayyash.
