This article presents information regarding the 1996 budget of the U.S. While the stakes in the budget fight are not in significant, compared with the President, the Gingrich Congress would cut more from Medicare and Medicaid, give greater tax breaks to the wealthy, lard the Pentagon with billions more than it requested and make deeper cuts in programs for the cities and the environment, the poor, children, students and the elderly, no matter what the outcome, the wages of most Americans will continue to stagnate or decline, more Americans will be left without adequate health insurance, more children will be raised in poverty; more students will find college unaffordable, and more prisons will be needed.
