To Be Preserved Forever

The article focuses on the preserving of manuscript during Joseph Stalin rule in Soviet Union. One can never know how many manuscripts, along with eminent correspondence, government documents, photographs, films and even paintings, perished in the bloody years from 1929 to 1953, when Stalin's regime tried to repress anything that deviated from its falsification of almost everything. Some were lost in the crude haste of millions of arrests, searches and confiscations; others were frantically discarded in fear of such visits; but many more were systematically destroyed. From Lubyanka Prison in the thirties, it has been reported, "a soot-stained chimney sprinkled Moscow with the ash of incinerated manuscripts."
