In his excellent and prescient new book, "The Crisis of the Italian State: From the Origins of the Cold War to the Fall of Berlusconi," Patrick McCarthy writes that Silvio Berlusconi's demagogic victory had been the outcome of "both a regime crisis and a crisis of modernization. Bologna, Italy, is now the European city that has been for the longest time under a government of the left: currently a coalition of former Communists and other radical parties, but since 1945 a bastion of the "Red" tradition of the Emilia Romagna region. McCarthy asserts that the Italian left has been too content with municipal reformism and the fat, happy option of localized privilege on an "isola" no matter how "felice."
