Did the General Lie to Congress?

The article focuses on General Colin Powell and the Iran/contra affair of 1987. General Powell is defined by the word "trust." So pronounces eminent historian Stephen Ambrose, a Powell-for-President booster. Colin Powell's champions are trying to sell the retired general as someone who resides far above the realm of petty, squabbling, double-talking politicians. But the way he dealt with a previous scandal suggests that Powell, in a pinch, might behave like those very politicians his supporters scorn, for in that instance he engaged in the usual pattern of denial, revision and backpedaling. This test case concerns a small but significant slice of the Iran/contra affair.
