The one true symbol of the wilderness today is the grizzly bear-Ursus liorribilis. Grizzlies and humans just don't get along. The Glacier Park area, in northwest Montana, holds about 500 grizzlies; the Yellowstone Park area, about 300. Further west, in the mountain ranges of central Idaho, about fifty bears survive. A couple of sinister memoranda com- posed in mid-July disclose that all three of these grizzly zones now face crisis. Grizzlies are the original sylvan Luddites, frightening tourists, occasionally taking one out, shredding pretty North Face tents, requiring relocation to distant portions of the parks and generally raising hell in the neighborhood.
