This article focuses on the joint press conference of Bob Dole and Newt Gingrich, legislators, on Medicare. They urged that all come together and forge a bipartisan policy to reduce the cost of Medicare and keep this program for the elderly solvent. Medicare is such a quagmire for Republican budget-cutters that they decided to deal with it separately from the budget. Still, Gingrich must squeeze as much as $300 billion out of Medicare in the next seven years to implement his contract with the U.S.
