In 1945 Radio was the bands, the sweet bands, the big bands--like Glenn Miller--but gradually, almost imperceptibly at first, changing into something else. Now and then people would hear a touch of what musicians called gamey. Within a few years it was called bop and then cool, in contrast to what had been traditional mainstream Armstrong, Ellington, Basie. And one should also had border radio--late at night, from Nashville, from the Southwest-playing black music. But the cultural world represented by radio and this music collided head-on with something else.
