The article focuses on the book "Making Modernism: Picasso and the Creation of the Market for Twentieth Century Art," by Michael C. FitzGerald. The spectacular art boom of the 1980s, the refurbishing of museums as party and shopping zones, the open discussion of art as a field for investment as well as prestige are all signs of the decay of the ideology of culture as a spiritual domain floating high above the mundane realm of commerce. FitzGerald's book argues that the art market was not peripheral to the development of modernism in art but central to it, that it was the crucible in which individual artists' reputations were forged as critics, collectors and curators joined with artists and dealers to define and confer artistic standing.
