It is said that it is not a good time to be black in the U.S. By almost any yardstick of economic or social progress, the racial gap has not narrowed in a generation and by some measures things are getting worse. But the white majority either does not believe this or simply does not care. The civil rights wars are over and won, or so it's widely thought, and it is time-past time, really-to move on. Even when there is evidence of past discrimination, a majority of Americans now oppose any special treatment based on race. A generation or so ago, the conventional explanation for the racial gaps was the white-on-black racism that mocked the American credo of equality.
