The article focuses on the socioeconomic conditions in the U.S., as of April 24, 1995. It seems unlikely that those who find affirmative action too burdensome, expensive, intrusive and unfair would prefer the sweeping measures required even to begin to equalize opportunity for all Americans regardless of race, gender and ethnicity. The New York Times recently reported results of a study demonstrating the crucial role of socioeconomic status in early childhood development. Researchers from Emory University and the federal Centers for Disease Control have found that children born to poor black women and to uneducated mothers of all races are more likely than others to suffer mild retardation.
