This article presents the author's views on the various issues related to the Middle East peace process between Israel and the Palestinians. The Gaza-Jericho accord between Israel and the Palestinians, signed on the White House lawn in September 1993, put off for subsequent permanent-status negotiations the most difficult issues of the conflict. The "permanent status" issues yet to be negotiated include Palestinian statehood, borders, settlements, refugees and Jerusalem. With problems in the original timetable and Israel's next national election scheduled for June 1996, current expectations are that negotiation of these issues will have to wait until after the election.
